Zelnick: GTA 6's Netflix Reveal Is Just the "Appetizer" Before More Trailers Drop

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has confirmed that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI “Extended Look” premiering on Netflix on August 27 is only the opening act of a much larger marketing rollout stretching to launch day on November 19, 2026. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz following the company’s latest earnings call, and later elaborating to Variety, Zelnick used a dinner-menu metaphor, calling the Netflix event one of the “hors d’oeuvres” and promising an “appetizers, main course, and dessert” sequence of reveals still to come. He declined to specify what form those later beats will take, leaving fans to speculate about a possible character-focused short film, a full gameplay deep dive, or word on the next GTA Online.

The Netflix stream itself is a first-of-its-kind arrangement. Netflix will hold the footage exclusively for six hours starting at 3 p.m. ET on August 27 before Rockstar uploads the identical material for free on YouTube at 9 p.m. ET and on its own GTA 6 site. Zelnick told Variety the partnership is meant to signal to the wider entertainment industry that GTA 6 is a “major entertainment tentpole, not just a video game,” noting the first two trailers already racked up hundreds of millions of YouTube views on their own. Netflix’s nonfiction programming chief, Brandon Riegg, has separately framed the deal by pointing out that GTA reveals already function as cultural events in their own right, which he offered as the studio’s rationale for debuting the footage on a streaming platform rather than YouTube alone. The arrangement has still drawn some criticism online as an unusual way to gate a major game trailer behind a subscription service, even temporarily.

Ahead of the reveal, an unverified leak has also been circulating, claiming the actual moment-to-moment gameplay will feel markedly different from past entries, with deeper vehicle interactions, more sophisticated AI-driven NPC behavior, and cooperative missions built around protagonists Jason and Lucia. The claims trace back to HipHopGamer, a source without an established track record for accurate unannounced Rockstar details, and nothing has surfaced to corroborate them, so they should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed information. Rockstar has also reportedly followed several major streamers, including MoistCr1TiKaL and Jynxzi, on social platforms weeks ahead of the premiere, a move fans are reading as a sign that creator access and coverage plans are being finalized.

Zelnick has continued talking up pre-order momentum without giving hard numbers, describing demand as “unprecedented and astonishing” and telling investors that early reservations have vastly outperformed the company’s internal forecasts, with most buyers opting for the pricier Ultimate Edition over the standard version. He has cautioned that pre-orders are not guaranteed sales since they can still be canceled, and Take-Two has not adjusted its financial guidance, noting explicitly that no units have technically sold yet. Combined with the studio’s continued silence on GTA Online’s next iteration, all signs point to Rockstar sticking to a deliberately staged reveal campaign rather than dumping all its marketing at once, a strategy that mirrors how it handled the run-up to GTA V in 2013.
